Ajax agrees with America, Alvarez quickly to Amsterdam

Ajax is once again fully in control of signing Matthijs de Ligt's successor, despite interest from English, Italian, and Russian clubs.

According to multiple sources in Mexico, the Amsterdam club reached a verbal agreement with Club America regarding the transfer fee for Edson Alvarez (21), which, as contractually stipulated, amounts to 17 million dollars, slightly more than 15 million euros. The agreements still need to be put in writing.

Because the Mexican international, who won the Gold Cup last week at the expense of the United States, has received a salary indication from Ajax that pleased him, an agreement on a five-year contract is only a matter of time. Alvarez will come to Amsterdam as soon as possible for the medical examination and the further settlement of the transfer.

If Ajax, as expected, succeeds in signing him, then director Marc Overmars will have fended off AS Roma, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace, and West Ham United. Zenit Saint Petersburg also joined at the last minute. The Russians were willing to go to great lengths to sign Alvarez, but the player himself had already chosen Ajax.

The successful Champions League year and the mega transfers of De Ligt and Frenkie de Jong seem to act as a magnet for foreign players. They see Ajax as the ideal stepping stone to the European top.
