Referee explains VAR decision in stadiums, KNVB starts trial this season

This season, the voices of Dutch top referees Björn Kuipers, Danny Makkelie, Serdar Gözübüyük, Bas Nijhuis and Dennis Higler will still echo through the stadiums in the Netherlands. The KNVB plans to conduct a trial with the referee's explanation after intervention by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), reports De Telegraaf.

After the field referee consults the VAR – following the example of American Football (NFL) – fans will then hear from the latter why a certain decision was made. "It is true that we intend to test an on-field announcement from the quarter-finals of the TOTO KNVB Cup," a football association spokesperson told the morning newspaper when asked.

"This means that after a VAR intervention, the referee will announce his decision via a microphone. His message will then be audible via the sound system in the stadium and during the TV broadcast."
